AN EFFORTLESS, WELL-FOUNDED METHOD FOR UNAVOIDABLE SUCCESS IN FOUR ROOMS: THE REVOLUTIONARY 4 MINUTE 32 SECOND PLAN TO CLEAR YOUR MIND AND CALM YOUR LIFE
--- [Gaston Bachelard suggests, in ‘The Poetics of Space’, that the domestic spaces we occupy, as well as the objects within it, have a reciprocal phenomenological relationship with our psychological frame of mind]. ---
[Large-scale installation work depicting the self-constructed home of a semi-fictitious character]. With Bachelard’s writing in mind, the architecture of the space abstractly embodies psychological trauma. Set-like architecture, a cage-like ceiling and repeated frame and box constructions within the apartment warn of confinement and a strange and false physical reality.
Hand-made elements evidence the occupants compulsive preoccupation with self-improvement and personal growth whist simultaneously betraying their self-destructive repercussions. Sincere attempts to create her own utopian environment breeds only discord + claustrophobia; the stripy garments, an eerily sentimental and clumsy variation on utilitarian workwear/camp uniform. The occupant neurotically hand-paints repeated stripe motifs throughout the shotgun apartment + bare lightbulbs hang from above, [reminiscent of the paintings of Francis Bacon and Phillip Guston].
[Linda Nochlin suggests that the fragment in art represents ‘a vanished wholeness’; psychological disconnectedness and human alienation made recognisable by the isolation of body parts by artists such as Theodore Gericault, whose mutilated body parts consign the body to the realm of the transgressive horizontal]. --- The uncanny confrontation with the fragmented body of the occupant highlights the voyeuristic engagement of the viewer and coincides with the chaotic crescendo of the accompanying sound piece. The figure occupies the same immediate physical space as the viewer, [Tom Flynn + psychological engagement].
Allusions to interiority within the physical apartment space are affirmed [a soundscape via. noise-cancelling headphones] the viewer is isolated further. Electro-acoustic musical techniques including gestural surrogacy incorporates sound elements which echo objects that exist in the actual space of the apartment. The viewer is both situated in and disconnected from the space simultaneously.
